“on the fly” is a performative sound sculpture that can be spontaneously created anywhere. Steffi Weismann adapts the work to the specific location and situation, and it can be performed as a solo, duo, or trio. The audience is often involved as well. The nylon strings, ranging from 2 to 6 meters in length, are partly secured to anchor points and partly stretched by hand. This creates variable pitches and opportunities for interaction. The resonance is transmitted from the cardboard via wireless microphones to one or two speakers. The result is a soundscape of flowing string sounds rich in overtones and multiphonics. Within this three-dimensional network of lines and floating cardboard boxes, the performer plays with one or two bows while standing, lying down, or sitting. Her body partially merges with the installation in a cyborg-like manner when she places her head inside a floating box, and her voice also becomes part of the soundscape. The performance remains abstract, yet creates many possibilities for association and becomes part of the environment. Perception is heightened, as if time were stretched and space expanded.
