Steffi Weismann, born in 1967 in Zurich, attended the
Zurich School of Design and studied costume and set design as well as
experimental music and performance art at the Berlin University of the Arts.
She is working on audiovisual and spatial concepts in time based arts
and is exploring the interactions between language, sound and new communication
media. Apart from works in the context of performance and visual art,
she has been performing experimental music and fluxus with the vocal performance group "Maulwerker" internationally over many years.
Since 2003 she has completed a number of audiovisual projects with live-video
in collaboration with composers of contemporary music (Annette Krebs, Andrea Neumann, Antje Vowinckel a.o.). In 2005 she began to work with
interactive elements in audioperfomances and created installations in public
space (MaxMSP based) in collaboration with the sound artist Georg Klein. Recently she has been focusing on outdoor interventions with the soundbelt LapStrap, based on do-it-yourself-technologies and methods of instant-composing. Currently she has been cooperating with the artists Özgür Erkök Moroder, Çigdem Üçüncü, Janine Eisenächer and Lorena Izquierdo.
Steffi Weismann is the co-founder of several artist groups, independent
art spaces and event series in Berlin: Kunsthaus KuLe (since 1990),
ex machinis (1995-2001), Labor Sonor (since 2000) and Fernwärme -
The Making of Performing Arts (2002-2007). In 2008 she received a stipend
from the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles and in 2009 a two-years grant for her
artistic research from the Univerisity of Visual Arts in Braunschweig
(Germany) where she has been teaching in the fields of performance and sound
art. In 2009 her performance "Move Mountains" has been awarded
with the Swiss performance prize „Sicht auf das Original“. Steffi Weismann has been invited to several international Art Festivals with the support of the Goethe Institute. In 2019 she has been awarded with a scholarship for contemporary music/sound art from the Berlin Senate. Since 2019 she is a member of Errant Sound – project space for Sound Art in Berlin.
